Buying a Running Treadmill
By Fred Waters
When purchasing a treadmill it is important your buy a model that is designed for your fitness goals. So often people purchase treadmills that are insufficient for those goals. If you are a runner there are certain features you want to consider when selecting a treadmill. Walking vs. Running Treadmills Running in comparison to walking on a treadmill requires a machine that is better able to handle the abuse that comes from the impact of running. Studies show that the activity of running results in 2.5 times the impact of your body weight. That is significant in comparison to walking. In addition, runners run considerably faster than walkers. Consequently, you need a treadmill that can absorb and reduce the shock of running. In addition, you need a treadmill that has a motor powerful enough to propel your running motion. Overall, you need a machine that is structurally more sound so that it can provide the necessary stability in response to the motion of running. What to Look For In a Running Treadmill Cheaper treadmills have thinner decks. For runners you will want a deck that is at least 1" thick so it won't crack. In addition, you will need a treadmill with a deck that provides superior shock absorption. One of the benefits of running on the treadmill is the reduction in the impact in comparison to running on the street or sidewalk. Ideally you want a treadmill with a deck that provides serious shock absorption towards the front where your foot lands, while giving a sturdier push-off towards the rear. Another consideration is the length of the deck. Since runners typically have longer strides you will want a treadmill with a deck that is long enough so that you don't feel like you are about to fall off the end. A 60" length or more running surface is recommended. There are also several treadmills that have an extra wide 22" width. Runners will require a treadmill with a motor powerful enough that it can handle running at higher speeds without straining. A minimum of a 3.0 continuous duty HP motor is recommended. Although you will find heavy duty running machine with 3.5 or 4.0 HP motors. What Should You Spend For a Running Treadmill? I suggest at least $1,500. For example, the Sole F80 is a decent running treadmill at that price. If you are a serious running, or will have multiple users, you should budget for a machine $2,000 or more. One of the main reasons for treadmill customer dissatisfaction is the fact many buy machines inadequate for their needs. If you are a runner, spend the necessary money for a running machine. In the "long run" you won't regret it.

Thank you for sharing this valuable information, Fred. I've been using a treadmill for the last four years, to help control my weight and maintain my mobility at age 75. You're never too old to learn!! Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
This intel strikes close to home.I am now 84 and have had both knees replaced about five years ago. I still manage between 5 and 10 minutes per day on my treadmill depending on my mood and how I feel.I also have a Weider workout station which I also use daily. I must adhere to the dictates of my body but it always tells me how I am doing. It is unfortunate that so many people succumb to sitting on the couch because I can't do that.Sitting on the couch is the fastest way to shorten your life, don't waste it.
